As I was hanging upside down this afternoon in downward dog pose I found myself thinking about the best essential oils to use for yoga. Obviously I acknowledged the thought and let it pass, but it did spark something worth writing about.
More often than not it is incense you can smell in and around a yoga studio. I love it and am very loyal to Satya Nag Champa which itself is a blend of frangipani and sandalwood. Wonderful for enhancing self confidence, feeling comfortable in our own skins and relaxing any nervous tension we are holding.
Today I was burning ginger and geranium which is warming and balancing. I needed it! I hadn’t done any yoga for a while and combined with the cold weather I definitely felt a little off balance and in need of some warmth.
And it seems to me that often what we are looking for on the outside, we are also looking for on the inside. We want to feel strong and flexible, maybe we are also looking for inner strength and flexibility of character. If we want to feel leaner on the outside, what is it we want to let go of within? If we need to switch off, what are we switching off from? The world in general or our own internal chatter and busyness?
The versatility of essential oils mean that they work on a number of levels as does the practice of yoga, therefore making a great combination. So if you want to be more focused and specific in your practice and fancy a change from incense you might like to try out some of the following blends based on how you want to feel.
I want to feel:
- Strong and flexible – try cedarwood (cedrus atlanticus) and lavandin (lavandula burnati) which is a hybrid of true lavender and spike lavender
- Balanced and energised – try geranium (pelargonium graveolens) and sweet orange (citrus sinensis)
- Calm and relaxed – try lavender (lavandula angustifolia) and sandalwood (santalum spicatum)
- Transcended – try frankincense (boswellia thurifera) and grapefruit (citrus paradisi)
What do you use for yoga? Do you have a favourite incense you burn or have you tried using essential oils?
